Mackenzie Sullivan English 202 Online 11/1/2017 Not All Heroes Wear Capes Many view Hamlet, the main character, in Shakespeare’s tragedy Hamlet as a hero. He portrays characteristics that prove to the reader that he does possess heroic qualities. Although, it is a struggle for him throughout the play, but as he goes through life and learns new ways of coping things, he develops new characteristics that he didn’t have in the beginning. Hamlet learns to overcome his anxiety, depression, and anger. In the end, he learns how to be calm and collected. The way Hamlet learns how to handle internal conflicts throughout the play, shows the readers a realistic view of the difficult encounters one may have when learning to cope with different†¦show more content†¦He destroyed Ophelia with cruelty and harshness. He began saying hurtful things the Ophelia such as, â€Å"I have heard of your paintings well enough, God hath given you one face, and you make yourselves another: you jig, you amble, and you lisp, you nick-nam e Gods creatures, and make your wantonness your ignorance† (ACT III, i). Not only is he being harsh with his words, but he disrespects her. Hamlet changes the way he acts towards Ophelia, â€Å"Hamlet: Lady, shall I lie in your lap? Ophelia: No, my lord. Hamlet: I mean, my head upon your lap? Ophelia: Ay, my lord. Hamlet: Do you think I meant country matters? Ophelia: I think nothing, my lord. Hamlet: Thats a fair thought to lie between maids legs† (ACT III, ii). Hamlet had the conversation with Ophelia because he desires sexual intimacy with her. He has a disrespectful behavior trying to use her to which only prolongs his insanity. Hamlet over thinks every situation which makes him angrier as the thoughts race through his mind. Claudius is the main cause of this issue. Claudius’ and Gertrude’s actions have ruined Hamlet’s faith in humanity, and he even contemplates suicide. He says, I do not set my life at a pins fee (ACT I, iv).
